Sky Terrace is Getting a Makeover

by Marguerite

Sky Terrace is one of Downtown Tacoma’s most unique condo buildings.  From it’s swank 1960’s architecture to the jaw dropping views of Mt. Rainier, the city, and the Puget Sound from the rooftop swimming pool and deck- Sky Terrace has some features that no other building in Tacoma can match.

Like every HOA and condo building in Tacoma, they’ve had their struggles.  They’ve seen the value of their units fall along with everyone else in the City of Destiny- but Sky Terrace seems to have a very involved and organized HOA and have avoided many of the housing crisis issues that other buildings in town have had to struggle with.  Where some buildings have struggled to maintain their buildings because of HOA defaults, Sky Terrace has continued to keep up on their building and actually managed to accomplish some improvements.  This is no small feat in our current economic climate.

Here are a few of the improvements going on at Sky Terrace this summer:

  • The building is getting a fresh exterior paint job with new contrasting colors, in addition broken floor tiles in the front entry will be totally replaced and matched to the new color scheme.
  • You might have noticed scaffolding and green wrapping all around the Stadium Way facing side of the building- that’s because the building’s concrete decks are being rebuilt. Residents will have new solid glass deck railings topped with white handrails to better take in the views.
  • The City of Tacoma has planned extensive improvements to Stadium Way starting in January of 2012. Part of these improvements will be reconstructing and resurfacing Stadium Way. There will be big changes including the addition of a light on 4th & Stadium Way that will make it safer and easier for cars turning left to go up 4th.  There will also be a bicycle lane, walkway cutouts, and benches to make the street more usable for those walking and cycling.

Sky Terrace appears to be one of the more well managed buildings in Tacoma.  The HOA is also looking into the possibility of installing charging stations for electric cars, which would make them the first condo building in Tacoma to accommodate electric vehicles.  As always, if I have missed any important points here or you have additional information to share with me about Sky Terrace, please contact me or leave a note in the comments, and if you live in Sky Terrace and want to invite me over to swim in the pool I’m cool with that, too!
